Abstract
The article presents an account of the main life events and scientific career of Nikolai Mikhailovich Knipovich. He was born 6 April 1862 in Finland that was a part of the Russian Empire at the time, and got secondary education there. In 1885, he graduated with honors from the Saint-Petersburg University with a degree in zoology. His life was so difficult at times, that it could have pushed him to quit science. Fortunately, that did not happen. By the end of the 19th century, he was known as a marine scientist. Participation in the Murmansk fisheries research expedition to the Barents Sea onboard the vessel Andrey Pervozvanny (1899-1901) brought him world fame. He is called the founder of fisheries research in the Russian North – and rightfully so.
